HARRIETTE WASHINGTON-WILLIAMS

Music Teacher, (Pre K-8th Grade)
Newark, New Jersey

Harriette has served as Music Resource Teacher for the Newark Public Schools, mentored new music teachers in the District, presented numerous music and book arts workshops across the state, and served as member and chairperson of the School Leadership Council. She was selected by the NJ Symphony Orchestra as a Master teacher and recognized by School Leadership Team I as an Outstanding Teacher. She has served on the revision committee for the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards, the NJ Department of Education Arts Framework Committee and a reader for the Artist-In-Education Grants NJ State Council on the Arts.

"As a lifelong lover of the arts and a participator in music, I was encouraged to teach music by my high school choral director. The opportunity to be actively involved in music personally as well as engage individuals and groups in the arts drives me to teach. The expression on a student’s face when they have mastered a concept, to have a student tell you that chorus is cool, to have a student tell you that you made a difference in their life, is priceless."

Harriette's personal interests in the arts include book arts, quilting, rubber stamping, and scrap booking. "The arts are important to education because they provide a vehicle for self-expression, stimulate imagination, students who participate in the arts have higher academic achievement."
