Global Warming Art Exhibit with Peer Evaluations by DeAnna Whitley, Social Studies Teacher: Students were guided in creating a class art exhibit on global warming ad pastel paintings as a way to continue discussion on the subject. Students also wrote constructive evaluations of one another's artwork.
Etchings Of Our Community by Janice Marsili, Middle School Art: This lesson was completed at David Brearley Art Department through a residency grant project funded by AIE and inspired by a printmaking class at ATi. Students worked with the Historical Society to create etchings, document the present day life of the town. They had great success and student support for the project publishing cookbooks, calenders, and even creating a printmaking exchange of "paper prayers" with an artist cooperative in Africa.
King Philips' and Pequot Wars through Visual Art and Drama by DeAnna Whitley, Social Studies: This lesson involved students in studying the Colonial History of the area through a study of culture and politics. The students created political posters and acted out plays reflecting the historical events they were studying, learning in exciting new ways.
Doll Books and More- Integrating Art, Literacy, and Culture by Lonnie Stewart-Austin, grades 4-8 Art, Literacy, and Social Studies: This lesson inspired by ATi and NJ AIE artists teaches students about literacy and world cultures by having them create "doll books", books in the shape of a character. Students are also involved in a variety of art styles including necklace books, muraling, dance, and stained glass window making.
Poem Books with Young Elementary Students by Leigh MacKevey, 5-8 years olds with Learning Disabilities: This lesson was inspired by a poetry workshop at ATi South with Peter Murphy. Students learn about many subjects by exploring the writing process, crafting poems and creating art books.
Native American Music and Storytelling by DeAnna Whitley, Social Studies Teacher: This lesson was inspired by story telling workshops at ATi. Students were engaged in exploring the many aspects of culture by exploring Native American history through Music, Story telling, and Visual Arts projects.
