Native American MUSIC & STORYTELLING

CLASS: U.S.I History Gr. 10

OBJECTIVES:Given discussion with visual & auditory enrichments, SWBAT explain in 1 paragraph each:

1. how geography influenced diverse Native American cultures
2. how most Natives were linked through a common culture despite geographical
differences creating diversity amongst them

Purpose: to be able to explain how culture is also environmental rather than just genetic & to conclude which one has most influence

MATERIALS: Native American music (which can be gained from New Age section in music shops/library loans from art & music dept.); Native American photo postcards & other supplementary illustrations from personal & library loan collections World History; Patterns of Interaction (class text); study-sheets comparing & contrasting traditional Native American & European cultures

PROCEDURES/ACTIVITIES

Do Now: create a pre-writing taxonomy (brainstorming vocabulary listed by letters of alphabet each word begins with) reflecting your prior knowledge of traditional Native American nations plus their architecture, foods, values, clothing, etc. elements of culture

I’ll play indigenous music while Ch. 16 sec. 1 main ideas discussed and supplemented with additional materials including pp. A18 &19 map in The Americans used to show Native nations

Assessment: obj. paragraphs stem from taxonomy & 5 key terms are underlined in those 2 paragraphs.

Rubric: 50% short answer quality + 50% applicable, sensible use of 10 vocabulary words

Professional Development: enrichment info. & some materials stem from my 1 month Arizona fellowship on Native American Encounters With Europeans won from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 00’ along w/Geraldine Dodge scholarship

H.W. – in your history journal, type a blog entry as an essay, song, skit, short story, or poem which describes a fictitious visit you paid to one Native American nation.
