ATI Fellows: Choose your own adventure books, Betty Providenti

ATI 2009 North
Best Practices/Betty Providenti

Lesson: Choose your own Adventure Gypsy Book
This lesson takes about 2 weeks to accomplish
Because of my involvement with the ATI summer program, I developed this lesson to bring back
To my students in September. My excitement over the program generated the same
Excitement in my students.

The Gypsy Book Project was intended to have the student write a story, choose your own adventure, and incorporate it into an accordion book design. Each part of the book was divided into pockets and each pocket contained the next part of the story. The story gave different outcomes as it progressed. The overall book design had to represent the story content.
A. To promote art specific skills.
B. To develop vocabulary skills
C. To utilize sequencing and structure
D. To develop active inquisitive habits
E. Ability to self direct
F. To promote creative play
G. To integrate subject matter/cross curriculum
It is my belief that all students need to appreciate the relationship that exist by using different subjects to accomplish this project. Research and development are addressed along with individual disciplines.
a. Students created a book using elements of art and assorted media.
b. One component of this project was to use written language to tell their story.
c. Math was used to figure the detentions and the number of pages by folds.
d. This project created a better understanding of art and literature combined.
e. Problem solving concept was developed through group discussion.
f. The student obtained an appreciation of writing as an art form.
Because of the size and scope of this project there was a verity of assessment measures.
a. Students were instructed to follow lesson perimeters. 75%
b. Students were to use tools and supplies correctly and responsibly. 25%
c. Extra credit-Includes doing work over and above the assignment parameters.

One of my students Brittany was a very disaffected student in all grades. When she came to me her attendance and behavior were terrible. She was uncontrollable. She was bounced around from shop to shop until I took her in. The book project gave her self-worth and confidence, as exhibited in her interview

Thanks for posting; book projects look great! Brittany seemed very interested in, engaged & proud of her work. This proves the right medium/materials/project needs to be selected for the "difficult" child for them to want to participate. She probably was bored to tears in her other classes and found your class had personal meaning... A cookie cutter approach does not fit all learners; if it did anyone could teach!
