Pop up Starscapes

After taking the Book Arts at aTi I returned to school in September ready for my students to take on some of these new projects. Their enthusiasm was extreme and I was so pleased with their success. This project is for
elementary School - Grade 2
Process
-Students are given a 12”x18” sheet of black construction paper. Hold the paper in the landscape position, fold in half and open.
-Students are allowed to select from 12 to 18 star stickers{different size, colors and patterns}
-Stickers are placed in an all over scattered design to evenly cover space.
-Star shapes are then outlined using construction paper crayons several times.
-Lines are drawn on to create the illusion of movement.
*Homework: Students are asked to create a poem or story, or write down a few lines of one that they know of that deals with the stars.
Class #2
-Students draw and cut out a spiral from a 9”x9” sheet of colored construction paper.
-Students will write their text on spiral and from beginning to end on both sides.
-Place glue on the center of the spiral and stick in the center of the right half of the folded paper with stars.
-Place glue on about the last 2” of the spiral. Fold paper in half and rub.
-When project is opened. Spiral with text pops out on a star background.

WOW! Great use of line, color and fun materials. Who ever said art class was "fluff"? I always thought it was a great idea to integrate the arts with other subject areas to reinforce & supplement learning. Your class looks like such fun & makes me think about getting back into the art room!
